I do not accept what has been made of me (2025)

Through a laborious process, I reclaim a text from Feminine Forever by Robert A. Wilson (1966), a book emblematic of the harmful perspectives surrounding (peri)menopause. By repurposing this text, I am to challenge its stereotypes. Using embroidery—a historically overlooked yet vital method in women’s art— I incorporate textiles and techniques passed down from my (grand)mother. Through this process, the archival work is transformed into pieces of self-determination and resilience. The art piece seeks to emphasize the power of commitment and urgency in rewriting (peri)menopausal narratives.

The two embroidered silkscreen textiles were exhibited in the central entrance of the Psychiatry Building (P1) of Amsterdam UMC Hospital from January 31 until February 28, which was organized in collaboration with Innovation Exchange Amsterdam (IXA) and the Art in Health Science at Amsterdam UMC (AHSA) platform.

Hysteria Archive (2022 - present)
Over the past two years, I have been researching hysteria both as a historical concept and a cultural phenomenon. My focus has largely been on 19th-century hysteria, particularly Jean M. Charcot’s
medicalization of what was then considered a neurological disorder. The works presented here are part of a creative research process, engaging in dialogue with the archival material. Through this process, I aim to remember the traumatic experiences endured by those labeled as hysterics while addressing the damaging stereotypes that emerged. By approaching these documents with empathy and care, I seek to breathe new life into these women’s legacies.

Luteal (2024)
Luteal investigates myths and shame surrounding menstrual cycles. It explores feelings of frustration, aggression, and hopelessness. Through drawing, photography, and interviews, I dive into the woods, both literally and metaphorically. Seeking solace in a mystical world where reality and myth intertwine, I challenge societal narratives. I question the impact of myths and taboos in the absence of proper education from schools and medical professionals through conversations with friends. This series explores a space of conflicted feelings due to centuries of stigmatization, aiming to provide comfort to the questioning and awareness of the curious.

Bloemardinne, Minne, i (2023)

Can you change what is said about someone’s life, especially when the telling of this life and its value is done so incorrectly? Through photography and writing letters, I try to build a connection with Bloemardinne, an influential woman from the 14th century, portrayed as part of a sculpture in the St-Michiels en St-Goedelekathedraal in Brussels. Because of the falsification of historical documents, she has been portrayed as a heretical sect leader. By visiting, connecting, befriending, and visualizing her, I clear her name and portray her as the loving, progressive feminist that I believe her to have been.
